The MET’s Roof Garden Commission: Imran Qureshi

The Metropolitan Museum of Art presents their latest Roof Garden Commission by Imran Qureshi opening today, May 14, through November 3, 2013. This year’s two-dimensional “roof canvas” is the first such installation where an artist has painted directly onto the Roof’s surface. Pakistani born Imran Qureshi’s red-splattered roof reveals a myriad trail of opulent, multi-petaled flowers. Echoing Central Park’s green leaves just over the Roof’s railing, Qureshi’s red leaves seem to offer hope amidst the chaos of what appear to be blood-stained roof tiles. The MET released a quote where Imran Qureshi describes his work as such: “The dialogue between life and death is an important element in my work. Leaves and nature, for example, represent the idea of life. And the particular color of red that I have been using in recent years can look so real, like blood. The red reminds me of the situation today in my country, Pakistan, and in the world around us, where violence is almost a daily occurrence. But somehow, people still have hope. The flowers that seem to emerge from the red paint in my work represent the hope that-despite everything-the people sustain somehow, their hope for a better future.”

The message is clear and can be found found in the most unexpected places. In art as in Life itself. One only has to look.

New York in Bloom at the High Line

It’s finally happening, the flowers and trees are blooming. A great spot to witness this majestic blooming is along the High Line on Manhattan’s West Side. The elevated rail structure re-purposed as a garden celebrates New York’s industrial past through a vibrant and ever-evolving seasonal palette. Last weekend was quite spectacular. I look forward to many a visit.

Museum Hopping

After eleven years living in New York, I finally made it to The Cloisters, The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s museum and gardens devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. It was a beautiful Spring day and the violets and bleeding hearts were in full bloom. What a delight to see the earth waking up from a long, cold winter. The structures awash in history perched above the Hudson River are the perfect escape from the bustle of the city. I look forward to seeing the bounty the gardens have to offer throughout the year. And it won’t take another eleven to return.Below photo form the MET. I love the giant flower and the flowing fabric carved in stone.

When FlowerSchool New York was asked to participate in creating a table for The Horticultural Society of New York’s ‘Flower Show Dinner Dance’ honoring Charles Masson, Creative Director Eileen Johnson’s first word was Morocco. A longtime friend of restauranteur and artist Charles Masson, Eileen wished to honor Charles by transporting him to one of his favorite cities, Morocco. And if you find yourself in Morocco, a visit to the Jardin Majorelle is a must. The verdant tropical oasis awash in Majorelle Blue got our creative juices flowing. A few Moroccan-style lanterns, a bright Majorelle Blue tablecloth and bright orange poppies and lotus pods came together to bring the Jardin Majorelle to New York! We added tall pink cherry blossom branches and dripping, fragrant jasmine to help our table come to life. Félicitations Charles! Revisiting

I had the rare pleasure of revisiting my childhood home recently. It is a uniquely beautiful story I felt too lovely not to share. My brother’s contracting company, Seneca Remodeling, had a kitchen project they were putting the finishing touches on. My Dad was remarking how touched he was that the owners had only given the kitchen a new modern face, that it’s bones were merely freshly updated. My Dad tells this story with a sense of gratitude because he is the original architect of this very same house that I grew up in, the very same house which my brother is doing the remodeling work on.

I showed up with an armful of flowers in hand to photograph the kitchen and breakfast-nook addition which Seneca built five years ago. I was quite embarrassed as the lovely owner had created a beautiful bouquet of flowers picked right from her yard, and the spaces were just so beautiful on their own that not much decoration was needed.

There is something so sweetly comforting in knowing that the people who have been living in my childhood home for 25 years are making the changes which extend the life and love of the home I called home. Even more so because my Dad is the architect. Even more so because my brother is making those changes. Thank you with sincere gratitude to The Wright Family!

A Space of Her Own

I recently did a little spring cleaning and now have a functional desk space. There is a home for all of my correspondence needs and a clear expanse to spread out and work. Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference. Happy Spring!
