An Afternoon at Wollam Gardens

We are really feeling spring here on the East Coast. I was recently in DC for work and made a delightful side trip to Wollam Gardens in Jeffersonton, Virginia. The gardens are just starting to wake up with blooming Daffodils, flowering Apricot and Quince in the fields, and Ranunculus, Anemone and Poppies just starting to show their faces in the greenhouses. We witnessed the budding, showy signs of spring as well as the treasures that are just beyond the usual line of sight. Plural varieties of hellebore. Butterflies long-stuck to a metal grid in a greenhouse. An abandoned bird’s nest in the crux of an Apricot branch. Chives curling out of the ground. And the buds of Viburnum just starting to unfurl on late winter’s stem. Even my daughter found a treasure. The gift of play that looms in an unexpected place. Welcome Spring!
