Reentry 2022

Reentry 2022

Mid-January finds me into a new year, 2022, and still living in the same pandemic now nearly two years as the world’s companion. Last summer and autumn were busy. The world seemed to be picking back up with vaccinations and for me, at least events were gratefully swinging. My youngest started kindergarten and the momentous significance was folded in with the busyness of reentry. I had been mulling a post on visiting Julia Child’s kitchen at the Smithsonian and then the trifecta of holidays hit with jobs and family and entertaining a flurry. And I couldn’t muster the sense of relevance for a chef’s kitchen which somehow seemed like a natural fit with the holiday cooking frenzy. Perhaps I was too much in it up to my elbows?

In any case, I have been missing my time here and this is what inspired me today. My kids went back to school today after we all tested positive for Covid and had to quarantine last week. Thankfully, with vaccinations we all sailed through with mostly mild symptoms. As the house was too quiet this morning, I noticed little moments my five year old had left around the apartment after our time of quarantine togetherness. And I remembered a post I made when my daughter started kindergarten nine years ago, chronicling the visuals reflecting her world at the time and the significance of her entry into formal school years. It’s fascinating to see how favorite items are arranged, and with my youngest his things are deliberately just so. It was a treat to find his little moments, reminding me to cherish every ounce of five year old exuberance as these truly are the golden years.

I’m not sure how many this will reach or even what relevance it has for anyone but me but here it goes anyway. Perhaps it’s just for my children and if so, well, here’s to you my Lovebug and Scooby! You give us the World  E V E R Y D A Y. Never forget how grateful Pai and I are for YOU.
