Holiday Nostalgia Train 2023: The New York Transit Museum’s R1/9S Train Ride

Every December, The New York Transit Museum runs its vintage 1930’s R1/9S trains on the D & F lines from 145th St to Second Avenue on Saturdays. We caught the train uptown at 145th St on the D line and took the nostalgia ride all the way to its end at the F line’s 2nd Ave stop (here’s a link to the schedule). It was a treat to go back in time and sit on the 1930’s era train. Modern for their time, the R1/9S’s complimented the IND’s Depression-Era Art Deco aesthetic, and featured rattan seats, paddle ceiling fans, incandescent light bulbs, roll signs, and period advertisements. The joy of nostalgia was palpable all the way down the line. At the last stop there were vintage costumes, period bands bands and dancing and merriment. If you’re out shopping in the city, today is the last Saturday to experience the nostalgia rides. Wishing you a magical holiday!
